About Us
Du.0 is a New York City-based violin duo specializing in experimental contemporary and noise-based improvised music. Formed in 2015 by Aimée Niemann (they/them) and Charlotte Munn-Wood (she/her), the ensemble “[shines] in moments of deep listening” (Tristan McKay, I Care If You Listen) and “[engages] in delicate sonic choreography, reacting and adjusting without latency" (Peter Margasak, Bandcamp Daily). Whether through improvisation, graphic notation, or use of extra-violinistic sounds and instruments, Du.0 cultivates freedom and innovation in its artistic expression and seeks to continue the violin’s legacy into the 21st century by expanding beyond the traditional identity of the violinist.
Passionate about collaborating with living composers, particularly femme and queer artists, Du.0 has worked with Emily Praetorius, Aleksandra Vrebalov, Leah Asher, Sky Macklay, Jessica Pavone, actor-director Polina Ionina, and visual artist Beatrice Modisett, among others. In 2020, they premiered large-scale commissions by Leah Asher and Scott Wollschleger. Their first album, Thoughts From the Future (Gold Bolus Records), was featured as a “riveting debut album” on Best Contemporary Classical Music for May 2024 (Peter Margasak, Bandcamp Daily).
Aimée and Charlotte have also co-composed several pieces in addition to their more free-form improvised music. Their composition O Most Noble Greenness will be released on Orb Tapes in fall 2024, with a film by Kevin Sims. The SOUNDNEST premiered in Summer 2023 at Project Art Distribution on the streets of SoHo and later featured on Cleveland Uncommon Sound Project’s Re:Sound Festival, as well as at Analog Diary in Beacon, NY. Du.0 has received funding for their work from NYFA City Artist Corps Grant, the Foundation for Contemporary Arts Emergency Fund, and Flushing Town Hall.
Dedicated educators, Aimée and Charlotte teach at Third Street Music Settlement and Larchmont Music Academy and have led workshops at Manhattan School of Music, New York University, and in Pennsylvania’s East Penns Valley. Through their community engagement, hunger for new collaborations, and choice of off-the-beaten-path venues, Du.0 has garnered an “enthusiastic audience [and] demonstrates that lively support for an unconventional ensemble is not a relic of the past.” (ICIYL)
